Launch at Parkinson Resource Center .

The Community Development Department is one of the partners of an initiative intended to reverse the decline in literacy in Barbados. It’s the Little Libraries project, which was launched on Tuesday, 7th November, 2023 at the Parkinson Resource Center in the Pine, St Michael.

Acting Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Hon. Davidson Ishmael, M.P announced that there will be similar libraries at various community centers throughout the island, with the aim to reach all sectors of the Barbadian population,” Minister Ishmael remarked.

He also added that the Ministry has conceptualized the project as a likely foundation for the formation and revival of reading clubs which will have the knock-on benefit of ensuring the sustainability of these mini-libraries. “Through its various agencies the Ministry commits to offer those reading clubs technical and financial support, and I am confident that our various partners who are with us today will pledge similar support,” he added. Minister Ishmael cut the ribbon to officially open the first Little Library, noting that its impact could be far reaching. When finished 15 mini-libraries will be established across Barbados.

Regional Assistant Project Coordinator

In 2008, I embarked on a new journey, relocating to Barbados with my family. I joined the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) at The University of the West Indies (UWI). I teach human anatomy to medical and applied sciences students. Committed to lifelong learning, I earned a WHO fellowship in Clinical Genetics, a Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning from UWI, specialized training in Research Methodology in Reproductive Medicine from NIHAFW, and Hospital management from India.

Beyond my role as an educator, I have made significant contributions to medical research through scholarly publications, book authorship, and the supervision of numerous postgraduate theses. My dedication has been recognized with the Dean’s Special Appreciation Award for outstanding contributions to pre-clinical teaching at UWI, along with multiple appreciation awards from the Medical Students’ Association (MSA).

I am proud to share that I have recently been granted Barbadian citizenship, a significant milestone in my journey. My family and I were warmly embraced by the Barbadian community, receiving an abundance of love and respect. This warmth and acceptance greatly eased our transition and made our experience deeply fulfilling.
